Roman Street Food

Not just pasta, pizza and artichokes! Well also that, but imagine the roman cuisine that you can grab and eat on the go! I personally love the idea of typical dishes transformed in something more street and fast. If you love street food, buckle up and get ready!

Supplì

The fried rice ball is the oldest street food Rome has! Deliciously tasty with tomato sauce and a heart of melted mozzarella (supplì al telefono, supply phone style, because of what the mozzarella does when you open, or bite it). Nowadays you can find it in many variations: cacio e pepe, with fish, with artichokes and many more. Where: every pizzeria al taglio sells supplì. My favourite are Supplì Roma in Trastevere, Alari and La Casa del Supplì.

Pizza rossa/bianca

The pizza bianca and rossa are definitely a statement! You can eat it at any hour, seriously, and the smell of it is just too good. You can taste a great pizza bianca or rossa at many forni (bakeries) in Roma. Pizza bianca for example is great alone or stuffed, and the rossa is as simple as it is amazing. Where: every forno around the city, alimentari shops/pizzicherie. Two of my favourite are Roscioli and Panificio Costantini.

Trapizzino

A few years ago, a new addition to the street food scene made every Roman go crazy; we’re talking about the Trapizzino. In between a tramezzino (a sandwich that you can find in any bar) and the pizza dough, filled with Roman dishes like coda alla vaccinara, pollo con peperoni or trippa Alla Romana. A delicious and filling snack, that becomes a proper meal! Where: Trapizzino in Testaccio and Trastevere.

Panino con la porchetta

The classic snack in and out of Rome is the panino with porchetta. For lunch, for dinner, after a night out, it’s always time for a panino like that. Filled with porchetta di Ariccia or Frascati, the panino is so simple that it doesn’t need more than that (no sauces or other ingredients). Where: fraschetterie in Ariccia or Frascati, or pizzicherie/alimentari shops in Rome.

Panizzo

The panizzo romano is simply delicious, a masterpiece! The pizza dough and the bread dough meets, to create a new kind of panino, with a lot of taste. You can combine every ingredients from their list and there’s a vegetarian option too. So, so good! Where: Panizzo in Centocelle.

Pizza & Mortadella

A true statement. Warm pizza bianca and thin cut fresh mortadella: nothing else. Typical and delicious. To appreciate it even more enter a pizzicheria, instead of a pizzeria, where they would cut the mortadella in the moment. Less is more! Where: pizzicherie/alimentari shops.

Maritozzo

And if you are looking for something sweet, nothing else is better than a big fat maritozzo with fresh whipped cream overflowing on the side! Excellent for a special breakfast or for an after dinner treat, the maritozzo will make you fall in love with it. Where: Regoli, Bonci and Il Maritozzo Rosso.
